-Freshman Year Reading Response
This story is about an anthropologist that wanted to study what it was like to be a freshman in college. The author found it difficult to relate and understand the lifestyle and culture of college students and literally becomes a freshman to get first hand experience and research on them. The story generally explains her experience of being a freshmen and some of things she has learned from it. The story was organized chronologically starting with the first day and ending with her thoughts and reflection on the whole experience.
The only thing I don't understand is if the author (Rebekah Nathan) is the Anthropologist or if she is writing about someone else's experience. I also believe that research she did has to have some degree of invalidity in it, due to the fact that she was well into her adult years while writing it. I think the experience of being a freshman is significantly different depending on your age. I also think it would be kind of hard for the researcher to truly relate to the students when she is trying to be one herself. Her trying to act like a young, 18 year old freshmen ( trying to learn the slang and use it for example ) is not closely accurate to actually being one herself.
That being said, I still found this text interesting and found some relatable experiences to the researcher. The way the author described the setting of the first day of dorm life ( stuff piled in the halls, freshmen standing in lines at front door, etc. ) is the exact way I would depict the first day I was here. I also believe the author was truthful when speaking about how she related to the students easily through sports. I also find it much easier to converse and relate to others older than me when competing in a sporting event.

-The Mind at Work Reading Response
This text is based on a man who came from a poverty stricken, foreign family. They all had a strong work ethic and did work that was not relatively easy. One point the author made was the link between being an adult and doing something in the world. This I find interesting and relatable. The idea of making a good impact on the world is just as satisfying whether you are the mailman, or an accountant at a multi-million dollar firm. The amount of money may be different, but the satisfaction of contributing to our world is just as satisfying as long as you are working.
Another idea of the author is the stigma people gain from their job title. For example, some may judge a garbage man to be unclean just because of his job title. Or that people that work at McDonalds are uneducated. The authors family was unfortunate because they were not citizens and didn't have the luxury of an education. This is not under their control and they are at a disadvantage to other working class people because of it which is unfair. This text I have found beneficial and I have learned some things I can apply to my own life.
